The Department of Geology at Government Degree College (GDC) Shopian is dedicated to imparting quality education and fostering a research-driven understanding of Earth sciences. Offering a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Geology, the department aims to equip students with a comprehensive grasp of the Earth's structure, materials, dynamic processes, and its evolving history and future. Emphasizing both theoretical foundations and hands-on training, the program prepares students for diverse careers in geoscience industries, environmental consulting, research, and academia.
Located in the geologically diverse region of Shopian, the department leverages the natural setting for effective field-based learning. The curriculum covers key areas such as mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, and environmental geoscience, enabling students to address pressing global and regional challenges like sustainable resource use, environmental conservation, and disaster risk reduction. The department remains committed to nurturing scientifically sound and socially responsible geoscientists.

Message from Head of the Department

It is with great warmth and responsibility that I join Govt. Degree College, Shopian, as Head of the Department of Geology. Prior to this, I served at GDC Kulgam, where I had the privilege of nurturing a budding batch of geologists from our very own Kashmir Valley. I stepped away from a stable position as a Senior Geoscientist at Oil India Limited to pursue a deeper purpose—building a generation of homegrown geoscientists capable of contributing meaningfully to India’s energy, environmental, and disaster-resilience sectors. I believe the students of Kashmir carry immense potential. As I begin this new chapter at GDC Shopian, I look forward to working together to inspire curiosity, discipline, and innovation in the geosciences. Let us together shape a department that not only teaches but also uplifts, empowers, and transforms.
